Remember JGL?

That smart little library developed by ObjectSpace (now JGL is owned by Recursion Software) when Java first came out with no real data structures except Hashtable and Vector? Smart move to take STL C++ Standard Template Library) and map it to Java. It was a very useful library. From what I rember, ObjectSpace had offered it to Sun. But we all know Sun and its affinity to the NIH syndrome? JGL wsn't invented in house. So we waited for Collections which came years later.

Well, fortunately JGL survived and developed a community around it. I'm glad, because it is a well written and thought out library. Recently, it resurfaced in Borland's offerings. Check out http://borland.com/news/press_releases/2003/04_21_03_recursion_software_jgl_included.html. Borland is definitely making some smart moves with acquisitions (TogetherJ) and extensions. Bundling TogetherJ and JGL should definitely enhance their tools and following that they have in the community.

Its becoming a tough market for library and toolkit providers to continue as independent vendors. This is one way to survive.
