Saw it this Friday. This has to be the best movie of 2004. It is very fast and keeps you at the edge of your seat. Yet, if you think back over the scenes after seeing the movie, there is very little action. But there is all of the suspense, intensity, drama, and mystery to make this a movie you can't afford to miss.
I'd read the Bourne triology several years ago. One of the things my wife and I do after seeing a movie is not only discuss the actors, but also discuss who else could have played the same role. Matt Damon was Jason Bourne personified. Bourne couldn'thave been a James Bond type character - suave, handsome, always cool and composed. Bourne is a darker person - confused, rugged, intense, and unnoticable in a crowd. But his focus, and a purpose that is obvious in everything from his expression, to his gait makes him stand out. And there is a confidence in doing what he is doing - which comes from animal-like instincts, superhuman capacity to adapt, and plans that are 10 steps ahead of the CIA and the audience. Who else would have been good for this role? Maybe Tom Cruise? Nah! Tom Cruise is a pretty boy. Pierce Brosnen is too suave. To me a younger Tom Hanks may have been a good candidate. Another guy I can think of is Johnny Depp. Yep. Can definitely see Depp in the Bond role.
I thought it was much better than the Identity, which I barely remember now. What I do remember is being a little disappointed in the Bourne Identity, maybe because I had the original (with Richard Chamberlain as Bourne) to compare with - and that was closer to the actual story in the book. In case of Bourne Supremacy, its another case of the sequel being better than the original. Too, I have forgotten the original story.
